Here at Filmride, we promote the idea that diversity from all walks of life ultimately benefits the independent film scene, and in the case of women independent filmmakers we believe there lies fresh and exciting talent waiting to be discovered. In critically-acclaimed indie hits like Old Joy and Certain Women, Kelly Reichardt proves that independent films made by women can leave a substantial mark on the film scene by providing more incentive for distributors to hear women’s voices. Her keen and insightful masterclass sheds new light on what women directors can do to start their film careers.

1.Practice your craft daily

Reichardt believes women filmmakers should not just wait for funding for their projects. In the meantime, when the money is not there, indie filmmakers should take the time to hone their craft every day. Practicing lighting, production design, or editing will prove beneficial in the long run, especially in micro-budget films where indie directors are known to have multiple production roles.

2.Find your own personal way of making an indie film

Starting out with two-man crews and no lighting gear, Reichardt grew to love working with minimal crew and equipment. Even in period pieces with big stars like Meek’s Cutoff, the director maintains a down-to-earth approach to making films, even asking her actors to become part of the crew. Similarly, women independent filmmakers find their voice when they find their own way of working.

3.Look for collaborators who inspire you

Some of the best moments in making an independent film, according to Reichardt, is when you gather your crew for a meeting and begin brainstorming ideas on how to make the movie. Inspiration can come from these meetings with other likeminded people. And as the growing independent filmmaking community at Filmride shows, it is easier now to meet and connect with talented filmmakers like yourself.
